Term 1 Week 9 - Happy Easter!

KAYA parents,

We cannot believe that we are in our final week of Term One! This term has whizzed by, and we have had a truly wonderful time getting to know each other in our Year 3 family!

Key Learning in 3R
MATHS
The last few weeks we have been exploring addition and measurement. We have investigated a range of mental and written strategies to add to our toolbox to help us solve a range of simple addition problems. We have also had a blast exploring length, mass, capacity and area in an interactive way. The students have loved these sessions!

Look out! This week our final Seesaw post, for the term, will be added to our Seesaw portfolio. This assessment will focus on displaying our knowledge of addition strategies. There will also be a section where we explain to you what we did to solve a vertical addition problem with regrouping! Look for those audios in the task.

HASS
This week we are working on completing our final project in our HASS investigation. We have been exploring a neighbouring country to Australia. We have used task cards and the internet to search and identify relevant facts about our chosen country. This week we will be turning our research into an informative poster using our iPads. We look forward to sharing it with you.

RELIGION
Last Sunday marked the beginning of Holy Week as we celebrated Palm Sunday. Each day this week we have been and will continue to explore and discover four main events that happen during Holy Week in the lead up to Easter Sunday. So far we've looked at Palm Sunday and the Last Supper. Ask us what happened during these special events tonight and we can explain the main details.

Important Info
Holy Week:
This is the most important week in the Catholic calendar. We will celebrate the 'Stations of the Cross' on Thursday after recess at 11am in the school hall,  if you would like to attend.

Homework
As this week comes to an end, we are looking forward to the holidays commencing. Can you please ensure all students bring their homework folders to school on Thursday morning.

There will be no homework set by teachers during the school holidays. It is important that your child has a well earnt break from the busyness of this term. If you are looking for them to continue some homework for routine, I would suggest a small amount of reading and continuing practicing their 2, 3, 4, 5 & 10 timetables.

Thank You
Thank you to all the parents that met with us at the Parent Teacher Interviews last Friday. It was wonderful to sit down with all of you and talk about your amazing children. Whilst it was a long day, we were so grateful to be able to share as much

We also wanted to say a big thank you to you all for being so supportive and positive this term. We have loved getting to know you and your children and feel very lucky to have such a wonderful class. What a dream start to the year we have had!

Happy Easter to you all, have safe and restful school holidays! We look forward to seeing you all again in Term Two.

                    Kind regards,

Week 6 & 7 Term 1 2024

KAYA parents,

That long weekend couldn't have come at a more perfect time! We hope you enjoyed the break and had a chance to rest and recoup, as well as have a bit of fun.

Whilst I didn't make it to Pink, I did get to frolic like a tourist down here in our special town. From wandering through the sculptures by the bay, losing horrifically to my family at Par 3 and seeing the wonderful fireworks down at the foreshore...I can confirm I'm pretty chuffed with this place we call home💜

Key Learning in 3R
MATHS
The students have been focusing on the properties of Odd and Even numbers before being interrupted by assessments, but we will resume with revising our mental addition and subtraction strategies before we lead into the written addition and subtraction processes.

ENGLISH
The children have been working hard to achieve their best throughout their reading rotations. The students are adapting well to our new routines and showing a liking to the 'Listen and Draw' pair activity.

In Writing, we have been learning about the structural elements of a persuasive text in preparation for NAPLAN. They have begun writing a solid piece trying to convince us teachers to have a class pet. This week we will continue to develop these texts by forming strong conclusions and exploring how persuasive language devices can create even stringer arguments.

ART
There are some stunning pieces of art hanging in our classroom at the moment, please come in and see our interpretation of the Andres Valencia Inspired Portraits. Please come in and see these.

Next task is creating some patterned fish. There are many processes involved in this piece to get the final product. What great opportunities Mrs Sorgiovanni is providing!

Important Information
NAPLAN 2024
NAPLAN starts next week (Week 7) and will run over 2 weeks. It is particularly important that all students are familiar with the variety of question types used in NAPLAN. Therefore we will be completing practice tests for the three online assessments: Spelling, Mathematics and Reading Conventions.

Tuesday 5th March - Mathematics Practice Test
Wednesday 6th March - Spelling Practice Test
Friday 8th March - Reading Conventions Practice Test

Please note that these practice sessions are not formal, we are carrying them out to test the school technical capabilities as well as exposing the students to a range of types of questions.

ACARA NAPLAN Online public demonstration site (www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) is available for additional exposure  and allows staff, students and parents to view, and interact with, example test questions. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child and NAPLAN, please see us classroom teachers to discuss options.

Whole School Mass & Leadership Badges Presentation
All families are warmly invited to attend our mass on Wednesday 6th March at 11am in the hall. This is a chance for us to be together in prayer and the Year 6 leadership badges will be blessed and then presented to the students.

Project Compassion Colouring Competition
The Spirit Spies will be promoting an Easter colouring in competition to raise money for Project Compassion. Students will be asked to pay $1 to participate in the competition and winners will be announced at our Holy Thursday gathering.

Pupil Free Day
A reminder that Friday 22nd March will be our day for parent meetings. Information will be shared in the coming weeks about how to book in for these online.

These meetings will be in 15 minute time slots and will give you an overview on how your child is progressing at this point in time in Literacy (Reading, Spelling & Writing) and Numeracy (Number strand) and discuss any concerns from a teacher or parent point of view.

It has already been quite an interrupted start to the year and with many events now out of the way, we can settle more deeply into our teaching and learning program to gather information and date about your child's progress. If you have any pressing concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss them...if your query is more general in nature, we look forward to meeting with you on the Friday to discuss them.

Mrs Ricciardone - PM and IPI Reading Tests
Mrs Ricciardone will be carrying out Reading tests on the students all day Wednesday, which will be reported back to you at the Parent Teacher interviews. Mrs Sorgiovanni will be coming in to teach in the class. Thank you Mrs Sorgiovanni, for keeping things as consistent as possible💖

Character Strength of the Week...Fairness...

Justice
Fairness
Just
Does not let feelings
bias decisions about others
Equitable
Applies the same rules
to everyone
"Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights
of the poor and needy. " Proverbs 31:9

used with Permission.

St John Baptist De La Salle was known for his contributions to education reform and to equality in education for all in France. He strongly advocated for the “the last, the least and the lost”. Do you treat everybody the same? Do you not let your feelings bias your decisions?

Fairness is treating people justly, not letting your personal feelings bias your decisions about others. You want to give everyone a fair chance, and believe there should be equal opportunity for all, though you also realise that what is fair for one person might not be fair for another.

A really tough one to tap into at times, especially during sports or games.

  • Mrs Ricciardone is super sad to not be in the classroom on Wednesday...however she is excited to work one on one with the students to see if any of the students have already made growth in their reading since last year.
